This papercutting was commissioned by composer Michael Markowski as cover art for his wind band piece of the same title. Markowski states that he was inspired when he saw a small tree in front of his apartment window struggling to grow through the cracked pavement of New York City streets, and was moved by the beauty of its perseverance. He has photos of that particular tree in different seasons of the year. The white tree portrayed in this papercutting is drawn that exact same tree.
